Experience
While we don’t offer formal dirt training, our trips are designed for a range of skill levels and include options for one-on-one or small-group adventures that allow time for practice and growth. Our experienced guides are there to help you navigate obstacles and gain confidence on the trail. We recommend that riders have at least five years of street-riding experience and some prior exposure to off-road riding, even if minimal.
Pro Tip: Training isn’t for everyone. Ask us about one on one rides.
Group Sizes
Our campouts and BDR-style adventures are our most intimate experiences, typically limited to 8–10 people including staff, to keep the riding tight and downtime minimal. For trips with mixed lodging or support vehicles, group size may increase to 14–16 participants. Larger rally-style events may have open attendance depending on the format, but our focus remains on quality over quantity, keeping stops and wait times to a minimum.
Pro Tip: Put a group together of your own, and create your own custom event!
Motorcycle Needs
For most of our guided rides, you’ll need a street-legal motorcycle between 250cc and 1200cc that is plated, insured, licensed, and registered. Each event may have specific size or type requirements based on the terrain and route.
Scooters, trikes, sidecars, mopeds, and three-wheelers are generally not permitted on our tours.
Your tires should be in good condition and appropriate for the terrain—whether that’s pavement, gravel, or technical off-road sections. When a support vehicle is included, it will carry the bulk of your luggage, but we recommend each rider carry a hydration pack, small tail or tank bag with snacks, tools, and any personal essentials.
Most tours will require panniers (soft or hard), and we encourage practical, lightweight setups over premium price tags. Fuel stops are typically spaced between 100–200 miles, depending on the specific tour and location.
Pro Tip: Have the right bike, gear, and experience for the trip.
Personal Requirements
To participate in a Breaking Away adventure, each rider must have:
• A current, valid, and unrestricted motorcycle license or endorsement
• Active motorcycle insurance
• Current and active health insurance
And finally…
• Deodorant. Seriously. You’ll be riding hard, sweating, and camping in close quarters. For everyone’s sake—bring it, wear it, love it.
